Fall 2024 Back to the Southwest, 10.19.24 - 11.13.24, Part 4, Blue Canyon Finale/Coal Mine Canyon/Ha Ho No Geh Canyon, AZ
Our full day exploring Blue Canyon was such an assault on the senses we slept like babies. We were up before it even started getting light and drove over to the western wall of Blue Canyon. As we went through the blue hour and the golden hour the light slowly bathed the rocks with various shades of purples, blues. pinks and oranges. Bertram arrived just before sunrise and we all just wandered up and down along the western edge of Blue Canyon. The light was fantastic but all too soon it was over.
Once the sun breaks the horizon, it is a very short span of time before the magic light morphs into full daylight. At the point we left Blue Canyon and drove back out, up the road a bit and turned onto another dirt road. He led us to a spot that overlooked a portion of Coal Mine Canyon. It was very different than Blue Canyon and from up on the rim it was a grand site indeed. He then took us to a few other spots along the rim that provided different perspectives of the canyon. After that we crossed over to the other side and were now looking down into an entirely different canyon called Ha Ho No Geh Canyon. Once again, Bertram took us to several different locations along the rim. Finally, we drove back out to the highway and went up a bit further to one last view of Coal Mine Canyon. This was the main view I had seen in the photos I found on the internet.
Bertram Tsavadawa was an outstanding guide and if you are ever thinking of going to visit this place, I give him my highest recommendation. Once again, here is his contact information: Ancient Pathways Tours, Bertram Tsavadawa, 928.797.8145, bertsaava@gmail.com. He does not have a website so texting him is the best way to get ahold of him. It is not a cheap tour, but I can say without a doubt that at least for us it was worth every penny.
Once we said our goodbyes to Bertram, we drove back to Page and met up with Mike. We all had a great couple of days apart so we celebrated by going to the Birdhouse for the best fried chicken in the state.
