Son of Crater - Return to Oregon, Part 2 of 2, 10.10.18

After a splendid day visiting Crater Lake, we still had unfinished business so we drove back up to the rim the next morning and parked at the Crater Lake Lodge. Once again it was really cold but it actually felt great since we were dressed for it. The early morning clouds still clung to the rim of the crater but all around us blue skies told us these clouds would burn off and we would have glorious bluebird conditions to climb 8,054’ Garfield Peak. This would turn out to be the high point of the entire trip both literally and figuratively.

Wizard Island and Lao Rock

I had seen the trail heading up Garfield Peak the last time we were here and knew I wanted to climb it. Even though there were clouds on the rim, Garfield was bathed in total sunshine as we started out. We were all in great moods and still buzzing from the success of the previous day. Knowing this was an easy trail (3.6 miles RT and roughly 1,000’ of vertical gain) we took our time and marveled at every little thing along the way. We had great views to the south to the Klamath Basin, Union Peak, Mt McGloughlin (9,495’) and various other points. Bridgit and I spotted a pine marten run across the trail. Everything was just heavenly. In the areas out of the breeze, the sun washed over us and we were constantly shedding layers and then putting them back on when we would get to a breezy point on the rim. The trail was wonderful and as it climbed higher we attained a ridge line that had great views of the lake. We followed the ridge up and over to the base of the summit block and a short way beyond that we were on top.

Garfield Peak (8,054’)

Although not a lot higher than the Watchman, the footings on either side of the summit were considerably lower than at the Watchman and we were probably correct in assuming this must be the ultimate viewing point for Crater Lake. If you ever decide to go there, I highly recommend taking this easy trail. You won’t be disappointed.

Wow!

Lifetime memories

Another great thing about visiting in October was the lack of crowds. We certainly saw people but as an example, we only shared our summit experience with one other couple. On the way back down, Bridgit scampered ahead like a little rabbit. Mike and I climbed up to a prominent point overlooking the lake and it had a sheer drop all the way to the lake, making for a great photo op.

Mike gets the point

Between the June trip and this one, I feel like I have really gotten a good mix of what Crater Lake has to offer. It is such an awe-inspiring place and I feel so blessed to have gone there twice in the same year. What a treat!

You would think Bridgit’s cheeks would get tired from smiling so much!
